Process


Step 1: Bend the aluminium sheet on the stump and Hammer the centre strip. 
The difficulty is to maintain the curvature of the aluminium sheet, when the sheet shrink, it  flattened. I tried to ask a friend to help me keep the aluminium bending, but it is very dangerous and I may hit their hands, so I just keep bending while hammering.
Step 2: Use planishing hammer to smooth the shrink of the centre strip with a metal forming dolly. And make both side of the edge stretched and bent by using the planishing hammer with a U shape dolly. 

The First Product was half finished and taken by someone when I was washing my hands, which made me terribly upset.




So, I did another one, and this time I tried to make it more curved and increased the width of both side strips.

Reflection Summary  Before studying this course, I thought that is really hard to create a curved or reverse curve shapes with out mechanical technique, or 3D printing technology. I would like to know how students in the industrial design discipline make their products especially with metal material. In architecture discipline there is few chance to use metal to make model, but models like Frank Gehry' Walt Disney Concert Hall have to use metal sheet to show the movement of the form and reflective materials. From this course I learned how to make templates and use the templates to create shapes with metal sheets with different,  and the characteristics and capability of shrinking and stretching. And a well prepared template and tool choice can achieve a better result. In the project Reverse I was quite inspired by the beautiful shape. I didn't have time to actually make a design and model, but I made a image to show my idea of reverse roof. I think I can try

Assignment2 - The Fuel Tank

Stage 1: In Group of 10 make the 1:1 Fuel Tank Template  We chose the Custom tank for a CB550, and used Rhino to prepare the Digital Tank File Stage 2: 'Slice' and Laser cutting  We used Autodesk Slicer for fusion360 to 'slice' the Digital fuel tank. for the Template we decided to   make 13x15 slices. The software automatically layout the slicer, but for saving time and material we rearrange the layout in Illustrate. Then, we were ready to do the laser cutting. The automatically generated slice file has innumerable line segment, so it still took us a long time to finish all the laser cutting. Stage 3: Assemble the template We glued all the template to make it more stable. Stage 4: In the small group we divide the tank into three parts  Prepare the aluminium sheet ,used A3 paper to measure the size of material I need and the and marked the shape and fuel tank contours.
